We are trying something at Corn Nation where we will bring you some shorter podcasts based on a headline or two of the day. This first episode is our Founder and Fearless Leader Jon Johnston talking about California’s university system remaining closed all throughout the Fall. Jon takes a look at the trickle-down effects of this decision and what part it may play in the upcoming football season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

For this episode, I interview Dr. Tim Coffey an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. He serves as Longwood University’s Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA. Dr. Coffey’s teaching duties include Biomechanics, and Civic Engagement Through Sport and Exercise, and his primary research focuses on lower extremity injury risk reduction and the role that strength and conditioning plays in this reduction. That’s a long introduction, isn’t it? I swear this guy has like 23 degrees or something. Good grief. We discuss the following:What is biomechanics and what do you study?
How is this useful for sports?
How does inactivity impact sports performance?
Strength and conditioning coaches - what do they do?
How does inactivity impact sports injury rates? In other words, why do football players need some time to get in condition before playing.
What types of activities can people do at home to stay in shape? Getting up to get a beer out of the fridge does not count.
Civic Engagement Through Sport and Exercise - What is this course about?
Dr. Coffey brought up that UNO has a phenomenal biomechanics department, something I did not know. We also discuss the future of biomechanics, including “exoskeletons”.Please Subscribe!I would really appreciate it if you could subscribe to our podcasts!Leave a Review! You could go out on the Apple podcast app and leave a review for us as well. Maybe send us feedback by making a comment on this article. Well, Nebraska lost another in-state recruit to another D1 school (and doggone Iowa of all of them). But hey, let’s focus on what we do have instead of what we don’t, okay? This week on SB Nation has been Marvel Week. And while we haven’t done a lot of participation in this, we have a secret weapon.Greg has another podcast that’s all about comics and other nerdy stuff. So this week, we draft a football team (or msot of one) made up of Marvel characters.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Jon and Greg spend the first half talking about high school football and how Greg didn’t have that. Since he forgot to ask Jon in the show, Greg wants to know from you the faithful:Is high school football a rite of passage in Nebraska? The NFL Draft was this past weekend, and the Davis twins were selected. Two more Blackshirts were picked up in the moments after the Draft ended. The guys remind you of where the Huskers landed. And we talk about some future Huskers, one for football and one for basketball.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. We’re back with another episode of: Bangarangs & Daggers. This week we are following up a weekend of watching the NFL draft with a look at the historical record of Nebrasketball players drafted in the NBA draft. How many Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball players have been drafted? What were the draftees professional career like? Finally, how does the Husker draftee count compare with other Big Ten schools? We take a look to try and answer all these questions this week.Making another guest appearance, Kevin’s husband Brad joins the show as the two break down the Husker draft history. As mentioned in the show, here is the complete list of draftees:Also mentioned in the pod, here is how you all voted over the weekend for who had the best career out of those drafted. We do hope certain individuals will accept our invitation to join the pod down the road to talk about Huskers who weren’t drafted and their professional career after their time in Lincoln. All vote counts considered, we decided to forgo a head to head match-up as the vote counts clearly indicate fans picked Tyronn Lue as the best career by a drafted Cornhusker with Eric Piatkowski coming in second. Please Subscribe!Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer (that way you won’t miss next week’s very special episode), and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well. This week on the new Five Heart Podcast, we have new sports topics to discuss. We get a sliver, a taste, a soupçon if you will, of normalcy. It’s the 2020 NFL Draft, live from everyone’s living room to your living room.Joe Burrow goes first and did you know that BLAH BLAH BLAH Nebraska? I mean, get over it. There’s no way to know if his career would have mirrored what it was had he come to Lincoln. Let’s not try to rewrite something that can’t be rewritten. We’ll take a few minutes to talk about Nebraska’s prospects in the draft, a couple (more) guys who left the basketball program. And there’s a random topic at the end on which we want your input. The Five Heart Podcast publishes each Friday morning, and if you subscribe to the show on one of the following podcast apps, will arrive on your device or playlist automatically.PodBean – Apple Podcasts – Google Play – Stitcher – Spotify! The Five Heart Podcast TwitterThe Five Heart Podcast Facebook PageThe Corn Nation TwitterThe Corn Nation Facebook PageBrian TowleGreg MehochkoHoss Reuter Learn more about your ad choices. We’re back with another episode of: Of Bangarans & Daggers. This week I have a very special guest on the show for a special episode. While he is not a former member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, my Great-Uncle Jack Phelan was kind enough to come on our show anyways and regale us with some truly great stories of his time playing basketball including winning the national championship in his sophomore season. As background, he played for the DePaul Blue Demons from 1943-1945 before leaving for the US Navy. He returned to the team from 1947-1949 and continued on to a career in the NBA playing for the Waterloo Hawks and Sheboygan Red Skins. During his playing career he was a forward, and played as a back-up center to legendary player George Mikan as they went to New York City and won the 1945 NIT Championship. At the time the NIT title was considered the more prestigious title than the NCAA tournament title. Overall the Blue Demons made the NIT 3 of his 4 seasons playing, making it to at least the semi-finals each time. He also played against the Harlem Globetrotters after his NBA career ended.I hope you enjoy listening to my talk with Jack Phelan as much as I did getting the opportunity to record this episode. We were able to talk about his time playing during war-time, the early days of Madison Square Garden, what it was like traveling for NBA games as a player, and even some of the evolution of the college game over time. Please Subscribe!Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer (that way you won’t miss next week’s very special episode), and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well. This week on the first of several episodes of its kind over the coming weeks and months as we watch an old game and then discuss them on the show. This week, we’re starting with a recommendation from our very own Hoss Reuter. He suggested the ‘92 Husker-Colorado game, available on YouTube. And then I (Greg) was the only one who actually watched the game. So we break down the game a little bit.If nothing else, stick around after the break because Jon breaks all of our hearts. Jon.[Jon’s Notes]I recall what I can. Going into the ‘92 game, we were all tense. Both teams were rated #8. Then that game happened! WOOOOOOOOO!Greg asks me stuff like “You were alive, do you remember what lead up to this game?”BOY DO I!The Five Heart Podcast publishes each Friday morning, and if you subscribe to the show on one of the following podcast apps, will arrive on your device or playlist automatically.PodBean – Apple Podcasts – Google Play – Stitcher – Spotify! The Five Heart Podcast TwitterThe Five Heart Podcast Facebook PageThe Corn Nation TwitterThe Corn Nation Facebook PageBrian TowleGreg MehochkoHoss Reuter Learn more about your ad choices.
