This episode I interview Sean Conley, author of the book “The Point After - How One Resilient Kicker Learned There Was More To Life Than The NFL”.“The Point After” is about Conley’s drive from childhood to become a NFL kicker despite his high school not having a football team. He somehow finds his way onto a small college team, then finds his way to Pitt and becomes a starter. Next, he tries the NFL.Conley’s book is interesting; it’s rare we get a story about a guy playing sports that isn’t a “glory story”, i.e., them or others talking about how great they are, what obstacles they had to overcome while nothing bad happens along the way unless it’s glossed over so as to not make you feel too bad. Conley is pretty honest about his goals, dreams, his failures and what they do to him. It’s even more rare we get a story from a kicker. Nobody cares about kickers until they miss or they don’t have one, but rarely do we get an idea of what they go through.Sean and I discuss:His book (duh)
The injury that ended his career, how it came from overuse, and why this is important for young athletes to understand.
What it’s like to try to make a NFL team.
Why I should feel sorry for a guy who’s been dumped from or is retiring from the NFL.
Yoga. And men.
Resilience.

Patrick Ebert from D1 baseball.com joins me for an interview about Big Ten baseball.Patrick and I discussed:The Big Ten’s conference only schedule. There is no such thing as RPI this season. Will that help or hurt the Big Ten when it comes time for the NCAA tournament selection.
Is there anything that stands out about the Big Ten’s baseball schedule?
Who are the top four teams in the conference?
Where you see Nebraska?
What was your reaction to Darin Erstad’s resignation?
What is your impression of Will Bolt?
Give us a breakdown of Nebraska’s pitching staff. Who do you see as starters?
The Big Ten doesn’t care about baseball. Give me a reaction to that statement.

Yoshi had some things going on. I had some things going on (and needed a break), but we finally got back together for another episode of the Yoshi Football Show. This episode, Yoshi and I talk about:His reaction to Ndamukong Suh, Lavonte David, and Khalil Davis winning super bowl rings (along with Tom Brady)
What he didn’t like about Nebraska football in 2020
What he liked about Nebraska football in 2020
The transfer portal, which lead to a conversation about Culture which lead to a conversation about Bo Pelini and “The Process”
Why older players matter a lot
Does “culture” affect the entire team even if one side (offense or defense) is struggling and the other is fine?
What he does daily to stay ready or prepare for football season
It was a fun conversation. I missed talking with Yoshi. We hope to keep doing these. If you have an idea for an episode topic, please let us know in the comments section. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Jon, Todd, Greg, and Nate (for a little while) talk about Husker wrestling, men’s basketball, softball and baseball. We also talk about the Super Bowl and Husker football. A recently departed Husker gave an interview and discussed the “culture” and we have determined that culture is subjective.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. It’s time for a new Five Heart Podcast. And this week, Greg, Jon, and Todd are all over the place, talking about 1990s HBO and some old Husker baseball memories. You remember baseball, right? Well it’s that sport that the Big Ten just can’t seem to figure out. (Softball too, sorry.) The Big Ten has misplayed every aspect of every sport for the last eleven months, putting schools and their teams in impossible situations. While other conferences are proactive and have tried to implement plans that allow their student-athletes an opportunity to compete, the Big Ten leadership can’t seem to get out of their own way. So we talk about the lack of a plan for baseball, and how the Nebrasketball team is playing 15 games in 32 days, yet the conference is concerned about the well-being of the players. And since we just had National Signing Day, we talk a little about the player who committed to Nebraska...and the player who did not.And some former Huskers are in the Super Bowl, so we have some predictions for that game. In this episode, Jon talks about Nebraska baseball and how the Big Ten doesn’t give a about baseball. We start with Nebraska fans’ attitude when we first joined the Big Ten. Remember that? We thought we’d take over the conference. Hasn’t quite happened. Is that Darin Erstad’s fault? What about recruiting?A schedule is yet to be released, but right now it looks like the 2021 Big Ten baseball season will be conference only, four games per weekend and no mid-week games. This will destroy the Big Ten’s RPI, meaning they’ll find it difficult to get more than one team into the NCAA Tournament.Does the Big Ten actually care about the sport of baseball? It doesn’t look like it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Greg is out again, so Jon (that’s me!) teams up with Ty Peteranetz and Beth Merrigan to talk about volleyball! Ty is back with us this volleyball season. We will be joined by one more, so the plan is for Corn Nation to have better Nebraska volleyball coverage than any other site in the nation!Back to the podcast/video thingy. Ty and Beth do most of the talking (Thank God!).We discuss:Why Nebraska is ranked #3 in the Big Ten behind Wisconsin and Minnesota, but ahead of Minnesota nationally.
Wisconsin’s #1 ranking.
The season. It’s a conference-only season for everyone. That’s going to make for a rather weird season.
Nebraska’s volleyball team, who’s back, who’s gone, and who’s just shown up.
The better player - Lauren Stivrin or Lexi Sun?
Omaha and the possibility the entire NCAA tourney might be played there.
Can one great volleyball player take over a court like Lebron James or Michael Jordan did in basketball?
Devaney might be really weird without fans
Other stuff that was way too technical for me that volleyball fans would really enjoy
Oh, and I say “Hootenanny” because that’s exactly what it’ll be if we get the NCAA tournament in Omaha! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Everybody loves tiers! In this short 10+ minute episode of the Counter Bootleg I comment on my owned biased perspective as well as how describing a transfer can show your real agenda. Then I take all 17 of Nebraska’s offensive transfers (since Frost has arrived) and put them into tiers. As we know, not all transfers are created equal. Please subscribe and download the podcast. Leave a review and let me know what you think! If there’s a football topic that you would like me to comment on for less than 10 minutes then let me know.
