We’re back with another episode of: Of Bangarans & Daggers. This week I have a very special guest on the show for a special episode. While he is not a former member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, my Great-Uncle Jack Phelan was kind enough to come on our show anyways and regale us with some truly great stories of his time playing basketball including winning the national championship in his sophomore season. As background, he played for the DePaul Blue Demons from 1943-1945 before leaving for the US Navy. He returned to the team from 1947-1949 and continued on to a career in the NBA playing for the Waterloo Hawks and Sheboygan Red Skins. During his playing career he was a forward, and played as a back-up center to legendary player George Mikan as they went to New York City and won the 1945 NIT Championship. At the time the NIT title was considered the more prestigious title than the NCAA tournament title. Overall the Blue Demons made the NIT 3 of his 4 seasons playing, making it to at least the semi-finals each time. He also played against the Harlem Globetrotters after his NBA career ended.I hope you enjoy listening to my talk with Jack Phelan as much as I did getting the opportunity to record this episode. We were able to talk about his time playing during war-time, the early days of Madison Square Garden, what it was like traveling for NBA games as a player, and even some of the evolution of the college game over time. Please Subscribe!Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer (that way you won’t miss next week’s very special episode), and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well. This week on the first of several episodes of its kind over the coming weeks and months as we watch an old game and then discuss them on the show. This week, we’re starting with a recommendation from our very own Hoss Reuter. He suggested the ‘92 Husker-Colorado game, available on YouTube. And then I (Greg) was the only one who actually watched the game. So we break down the game a little bit.If nothing else, stick around after the break because Jon breaks all of our hearts. Jon.[Jon’s Notes]I recall what I can. Going into the ‘92 game, we were all tense. Both teams were rated #8. Then that game happened! WOOOOOOOOO!Greg asks me stuff like “You were alive, do you remember what lead up to this game?”BOY DO I!The Five Heart Podcast publishes each Friday morning, and if you subscribe to the show on one of the following podcast apps, will arrive on your device or playlist automatically.PodBean – Apple Podcasts – Google Play – Stitcher – Spotify! The Five Heart Podcast TwitterThe Five Heart Podcast Facebook PageThe Corn Nation TwitterThe Corn Nation Facebook PageBrian TowleGreg MehochkoHoss Reuter Learn more about your ad choices. After a week off, Bangs and Dags is back to deliver all the interesting news and commentary you’ve come to expect from our show. Kevin continues along with Nebrasketball coverage as the off-season enters its 1,000,000th week... okay, maybe it’s only been four weeks and a day since the season officially ended for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. It might as well be week one million.First up today is confirming the scheduling news mentioned in our last episode about the upcoming non-conference series with former Big 8/12 foe, the Kansas State Wildcats. After that Kevin takes a look at the transfer news from around the Big Ten, and focus on the most recent Nebraska commit. Kevin did miss the news that broke while recording that Maryland Terrapins Jalen Smith is forgoing his remaining eligibility to enter the NBA draft. Finally, we take a look at where exactly Nebraska sits in relation to its peers. For this segment, we not only look at the Big Ten, but also the original Big 8 member schools as well. This segment is a bit numbers heavy, so to help you out, this is the content we cover here:Also, be sure to vote (and no cheating by googling the answer first please as this is meant to be fun) on who you think won the first ever NCAA tournament title in 1939:Please Subscribe! That’s a wrap for this week’s episode. In this episode, I interview not just one, but two doctors:Dr. Jill Weatherhead, Assistant Professor of adult and pediatric infectious diseases and tropical medicine at Baylor College Of Medicine
Dr. Zachary Binney, Dr of Epidemiology who also studies sports injury patterns in professional sports.
The focus of this episode is whether or not we will have college football in the fall.I ask the following questions:What are the latest timelines for a “return to normalcy?”
When can college football come back, and what has to happen for it to be able to do so?
Are there any preventatives against Covid-19? Are there any treatments?
How long does it take to develop a vaccine and why?
What do you say to people who think the current state of affairs is a hoax? (The “Paradox Of Prevention” explained!)

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Greg and Jon talk about some recent attrition to Nebraska athletics, in transfer portal action from last week and this week. Jervay Green, Dachon Burke Jr, and Jaevon McQuitty, all put their names in the portal. It’s particularly impressive for McQuitty who medically retired from football earlier this month.Hey, if he’s found the fountain of health, he probably needs to share its location with the CDC.Also, two Husker Women’s Basketball players are leaving the program to play basketball for schools closer to home. This sparks a long dialogue about Covid-19’s impact on recruiting, out-of-state enrollment, and budgets for athletic departments and universities alike. And do you partake of a pre-shower snack? It’s like a shower beer, but it’s food. Anyway, I want to know.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. Welcome back to another episode as we strive to bring you a distraction from your children and/or other newfound daytime “co-workers” during these strange and troubling times. We have a quick episode for you this week, but certainly one worth listening to!First we take a look at the transfer situation for the Huskers. Who is out to this point? Who is in? What potential targets should we start crossing our fingers for that are worth a look? Then I break down how our Nebraska Cornhuskers finished this season compared to previous first year head coaches. Was it really that bad? Do the advanced stats and rankings justify the gloom and doom, or was it same old-same old? Take a listen to find out for sure. Finally, we get to a sneak peak into rumor town at who might be getting put on the schedule for next season. Hint: it is a former Big 8/Big XII opponent, but you have to listen to find out who that might be and where the game will be played if it goes through.Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer, and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well. As the headline indicates we went an entire episode without mentioning the virus. We thought that would be great for our listeners to get a break from the news of the virus. So what did we talk about? Well how about the best moment the entire season when two Nebraska football players get into the game. Well at least Nate thought it was the best moment.Patrick and Kevin did not agree.Wait? What? Yep, that’s right folks. All three were finally on an episode together. We talked about the season which was, the season which we hope will be coming next year and how much blame can be placed on Hoiberg for how things went. Please take a chance to listen as this will be the last podcast for both Nate and Patrick for the time being. Kevin is going to keep it going forward, though it might not be weekly, as he still gets to talk about his favorite conference in the land!Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer, and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well.
