At the onset of this week’s recording, it was just Jon and Greg, talking about missing the hype (as ludicrous as it was) that surrounded the last summer heading into the football season. Remember those days? The Huskers were in the pre-season ranking, Adrian Martinez was a Heisman hopeful, and we knew a football season was on the horizon.Fast forward a year and we’re not even sure how many fans are going to be able to attend games in Memorial Stadium. We would openly welcome a little pre-season hype at this point.About midway through or so, CN Recruiting Writer Akelo Roberts saw a Zoom link in our Slack Chat Room and with no context, clicked it. Thankfully Jon was wearing a shirt. We heard a little about a new commit that Nebraska is welcoming to the squad and does Akelo feel we are in a better position this year than in recent years?Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. This is all pretty much conjecture. Nate and I disagree on some key elements on this week’s show, and it’s a continuation of off-air conversations that we’ve had for a long long time.Also...sports are back. At least it was for a while. The defending World Series Champion Washington Nationals were at one point in a rain delay in the season opener against the New York Yankees.NHL is coming back. NFL teams are reporting to training camps soon. The NBA is in the bubble. The Washington Football Team is in search of a new team name. What are your suggestions? Bonus points if your suggestion is the Washington Sentinels.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Todd Wolverton is back in the mic with Greg and Jon and a delicious debate starts things off. Runzas being sold illegally in Texas. What’s better, BBQ or Runzas? Why is there no regionally famous “type” of BBQ west of the Rocky Mountains (ie. Kansas City or Memphis or Carolina BBQ)?Dedrick Mills is on the Doak Walker Award Watchlist, and if it were any year but 2020, we’d be shouting “OF COURSE HE IS! 100 out of 136 running backs are on that list!” But it’s 2020, and we say “God bless you, press release, for making us think about football again!”And Todd and Greg have a discussion about Dylan’s series on the greatest Husker wrestlers of all time and what makes Jordan Burroughs so gosh darn good!Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. Patrick is back in this week’s episode with Kevin to talk peak off-season content. After complaining about the heat wave, they get right into the main buffet of content.First up is the news that the Nebraska Cornhuskers ticket office has paused season ticket sales at PBA. Brief and uninformed speculation ensues about the deeper meaning of basketball fandom . . . we mean the implications for a season follows.Next up is the recent offer made by Nebrasketball to yet another promising french prospect Adama Bal who does in fact know current frenchman on the roster Yvan Ouedraogo. Afterwards, Kevin goes off on his love for Cassius Winston and coach of the decade Tom Izzo while recapping the BTN All-Decade teams. However, Kevin manages to keep his recap brief so that Patrick and he can revisit the all-decade Nebraska team make-ups that the Corn Nation Nebrasketball Writing Staff (okay, maybe it was just Kevin that did that) picked back at the turn of the new year. You can more easily follow along with this final segment by referring back to Top 10 Part 1 (6-10) and Top 10 Part 2 (1-5). With that, it’s a wrap on this week’s episode, but the top ten wins will be recapped next time. This episode I am joined by my former SBNation boss, Matt Brown, who now writes a “freemium” newsletter and as of today announces a new venture.Matt Brown, author of the Extra Points newsletter, and Daniel Libit, founder/editor of The Intercollegiate, have announced a partnership that will merge their creative entities under a new company, The Collegiate Model, LLC (h/t the NCAA). The new collaboration, which will operate under the editorial banner of The Intercollegiate, will commence July 13.Matt and I discuss:The Big Ten’s announcement of playing conference-only games.
Whether Big Ten schools can get out of their non-conference game contracts and whether or not they should show some diplomacy towards those opponents they might not want to pay.
Is the Covid virus an “Act of God”? What is force majeure?
Why should I, as a Nebraska fan, care whether or not the Group of Five schools are hurt by financial difficulties?
Will there be college football?
What’s with this undercurrent of fans who want college football to be more ordered like the NFL? Don’t they know you cannot create order from chaos?
Is life without risk? Why are we in this position?

If you weren’t aware, sports are teetering on the brink of not being played. And the Big Ten announced on Thursday that it is eliminating all non-conference athletic activities for the Fall seasons. But hey, the Huskers did gain a couple of commitments since we last got together. And while student visa rules could impact a Thor and Ivan for the Husker Men’s Basketball team, the young Frenchman has slimmed down and worked on toning in the off-season.And those hops! And Jon talked about some fancy high-tech wizardry he is participating in at his work.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. This episode I am joined by Scott Dochterman. Scott writes about Iowa football for The Athletic.Scott and I discuss the following:Are Nebraska and Iowa rivals?
What is happening with Kirk Ferentz and the program with regards to accusations of racism and bias?
Will Kirk Ferentz survive the storm?
Scott’s perspective on Nebraska under Scott Frost
Will we have college football (it’s a required question these days)?
Note:The sound quality on this episode isn’t where I want it to be. This week on the Five Heart Podcast, ranchbabe joins Jon and Greg to talk about their perceived least favorite ways to die. There’s talk about the temperature needed to reduce a human body to ashes via cremation. There’s talk about first drinks of beer when we were underage. We also discuss Bill Moos seemingly doubling down on his assertion that Nebraska is in a better shape than they have been in his tenure to attain a six-win season. We discuss life on campus in the Covid-19 era, as well as your thoughts on Memorial Stadium in the times of the novel coronavirus.A wonderful shoutout to our friends at the Big Red Cobcast and Tweedy’s documentary Through These Gates.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. We’re back with another episode of: Of Bangarangs and Daggers. This week features a special day at the heart of the episode: America’s Independence Day. With our favorite country’s birthday coming up on Saturday, we decided to break from our Nebraska Cornhuskers coverage. Instead we focus on other athletic endeavors of the more day to day life and the time honored American traditions we all love for this episode. To help us talk about road-trips, hiking, camping, and other great American traditions, this week we feature Nebraska native Mikah Meyer on to talk to us about his record setting trip visiting all 419 National Park sites in one go!Mikah grew up in Lincoln, but after college has embarked on numerous road-trips and visited countless must see destinations in that time. In particular we focus on his successful attempt at becoming the first person to ever visit all National Park sites in one trip (you’ll find out the backstory about his effort at being the youngest as well by being sure to listen in on the episode).Besides indulging Kevin in highlighting the park sites Michigan and Nebraska offer in particular, you’ll hear about some of the most remote, best day trip, and most American sites to visit in our salute to America’s rich natural beauty. So be sure to listen in as we pay special tribute to the plentiful bounty of outdoor hiking, biking, running, kayaking, rafting, scuba-diving, climbing, camping, and simple breathtaking beauty our great country offers us as we get ready to celebrate its 244th birthday this Saturday!A big thank you to Mikah for coming on the pod this week. If you want to read about any individual park site from Mikah’s travels, follow along with his future trips, or contact him for speaking engagements then you can find all of that at his website. Believe me, the recaps of the various park sites are something to easily get lost in so make sure you take a look! Please Subscribe!Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer (that way you won’t miss next week’s very special episode), and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well. I couldn’t even say “I apologize in advance” before Jon started dropping f-bombs like the kids drop Bang-Snaps on the Fourth of July.Kristi McHugh is a special guest on the first half of the show. Wife of our very own Nate and a someone who admittedly “doesn’t really follow sports,” it’s an opportunity to get some insight into the life of someone who loses their husband for at least three hours every weekend during football season, but also plays the role of single mom while Nate coaches basketball in the winter. We hear about the “State of the Program” from someone who may not even qualify for “casual fan” status. In the second half of the show, we discuss the acquisition of Ezra Miller from Iowa, as well as some other scholarship transfers who chose to be walk-ons in Lincoln. Plus, the economic impact of no football will reverberate across Lincoln and the state.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830.
