This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Greg and Jon are joined by regulars Todd and Nate as well as special guest Husker Mike. The gents talk a little bit about the Ohio State game and then spend a LOT of time on this week’s opponent, the Wisconsin Badgers.Oh, you didn’t hear? That game has been cancelled. Ruled a “no contest.” Nate wrote a nice piece on that on Thursday. And that’s about it, really. We try not to whine. I think we succeeded. You be the judge.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. Today started pretty well. I was notified that the paperback version of my book, Been Dead, Never Been To Europe, was available in the Amazon store, and I was elated that I’d gotten through all the hurdles of self-publishing to get to this point. Then I hopped on Twitter to see what the world was screaming about, and there it was, news that the Nebraska - Wisconsin game had been cancelled.I was scheduled to do a podcast interview with Tyler Hunt of Bucky’s 5th Quarter, our SBNation Wisconsin site, this morning, and I was looking forward to talking to him about the game. I had interviewed Tyler a few weeks ago and we agreed that I’d come on their show to talk about Nebraska as game day came near.Instead of talking about the game, Tyler joined me and we shared our disappointment at the cancellation of the game. It’s not very long. It’s lacking the excitement of seeing how Nebraska’s defensive line would do against Wisconsin’s beefy offensive line and Nakia Watson pounding the ball up the middle.Last week versus Ohio State, Nebraska’s secondary left receivers open all over. How would they fare against Jay Ferguson, the Badgers’ tight end? How would Adrian Martinez, Luke McCaffrey and Nebraska’s upgraded offensive line fair against the Wisconsin defense?WHAT ABOUT OMAR MANNING’S DEBUT!!!!!!DAMMIT!I Have A Book Out!My memoir - Been Dead, Never Been To Europe - is available.A Story of ResilienceJon Johnston was an active, healthy adult when he dropped dead suddenly of a widowmaker heart attack. He was not expected to live, after being dead for more than 20 minutes, but if he did survive, his brain would forever be damaged due to oxygen deprivation. Alternating between humor, sadness, and anger at his body’s betrayal, Jon takes us with him as he puts his life back together. At the beginning, he sees the trauma as a minor inconvenience and expects a speedy recovery. As he realizes the damage to his heart is permanent, he is hit with another setback when he is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, leaving him with memory loss, debilitating headaches, and a loss of identity. Tasks that had been trivial had become onerous endeavors, and his life became an unexpected challenge.Been Dead, Never Been to Europe offers a real-life view of what it takes to rebuild after a devastating event, to accept an unexpected present and future, and to discover a new identity. Been Dead, Never Been to Europe will appeal to readers who seek memoirs of resilience, and to those whose own lives have been affected by unexpected trauma.Let’s Stay In Touch! Welcome to episode three where I take 10 minutes to talk about the 52-17 loss to Ohio State but 48 hours later. Not a surprise, I walked away from the game feeling pretty good. It says a lot about the past three years and state of the program that I can walk away from a 35 point loss feeling better than when it started. Then on to Wisconsin! Please subscribe and download the podcast. Greg and I get together to give you a postgame reaction about the Ohio State game today.Despite the 52-17 loss, some good things happened:The defensive line played reasonably well.Luke McCaffrey and Adrian Martinez looked pretty good. Maybe you’re a doomsayer, that no they didn’t. They collectively finished 16-20 passing for 160 yards. They combined for 164 of Nebraska’s 217 yards on the ground. They both fumbled (that’s not good). The offensive line looked better than it had in a while.Nebraska kept playing throughout the game. There were some bad things:Nebraska’s defensive backfield didn’t bother covering receivers as Justin Fields finished 20-21 for 276 yards and two TDs. His only incomplete reception was when DiCaprio Bootle knocked Chris Olave into the ground to save a touchdown.Turnovers.Lack of consistency on offense. Then there was this atrocious thing:The uneven application of flags. Nebraska nearly had as many players ejected as Ohio State had penalties. Then there were the holding calls. They could have made the same calls against Ohio State, but they chose not to. November 29, 2019.That feels like 37 years ago. But in reality it was 47 weeks. Forty-seven weeks since the Nebraska Cornhuskers last walked off the football field. Now the quest begins for the 2020 season. And it happens in empty stadiums. The season that Nebraska fans, players, coaches, and administrators fought so hard for begins in Columbus, OH against a formidable Buckeye squad, one that many “experts” believe will compete for a national championship. But don’t sleep on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Largely because there are so many unknowns. Little experience returns at the skill positions on offense. What about the new offensive coordinator?Nebraska’s greatest asset heading into their season opener may be the unknown. That’s part of what Greg, Jon, and Nate discuss on this week’s Five Heart Podcast. And with any luck, next week on our 200th episode, we’ll be celebrating a Husker victory.GBR. Win the game.Be sure to “Use Your Voice” and became a part of the show by calling (402) 327-1830. Kevin, Patrick, and Nate are back at it again as the Three Man Weave reunites to bring you the latest Nebrasketball news and speculation. But first, we rejoice in muted fashion the looming return of Big Ten football this weekend! It is a great distraction during the long 40 or so days left until the return of college hoops. As for the episode, we discuss the most recent Husker basketball offer. Additionally, Nebraska is in the top-five for a five-star recruit in the 2021 class! Yes, that’s right, Nebraska is both in the top-five for such a highly rated prospect (if he commits and signs, he would be basketball’s first five star ever and Nebraska’s first in football or basketball since 2005), and even has a crystal ball prediction in for the Huskers! Quite the exciting time for Nebrasketball fans especially, even if he doesn’t end up deciding to come to Lincoln. After that, Kevin spends a very, very long time speculating on the Nebraska conference schedule that is unlikely to be released for another two weeks at minimum. Patrick and Nate also join him in sharing their thoughts on confidence levels about a non-conference season happening for basketball first, though. Let us know in the comments who you hope the Huskers might draw for home/away and who they might face just once! In the meantime, that’s a wrap on this episode and we hope you enjoy it.Please Subscribe!Be sure to download and subscribe to our podcast on whatever platform you prefer (that way you won’t miss next week’s very special episode), and you’ll also get all of the other great, but not quite as great, Corn Nation Radio podcasts as well.
