Greg didn’t show up on time because of, oh, I don’t know... work or making a living or something like that.So Todd and I started the old podcast. I turned 60 this past week and when a guy turns 60, people expect him to say something about it, so I do. Then I give advice to young people about keeping their bodies in shape, which is rather ironic coming from a guy who stayed active most of his life and still died of a heart attack at 54.There’s the new lineman who recently committed to Nebraska.Koty Frank transferred and Todd he wishes he was coming back to Nebraska. So do I. But he’s not. Cam Chick entered the transfer portal rather than end his baseball career.Adrian Martinez has been making statements that have riled Nebraska fans. He’s said his Kansas State team is more talented than those he had at Nebraska. He’s said the statement below.Todd and I point out how thin-skinned Nebraska fans are reacting to Martinez’ statements. There’s a ranty bit maybe.Greg FINALLY JOINS US, and he’s caught in the trap of old farts. Being old farts requires us to talk about things we miss from the past.We came up with three things about college football we miss from when we were young. You’ll have to listen to find out what they are because I’m not telling you here.SO THERE. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

HEyoooooooooooo! Greg is gone! Todd is gone! It’s just me, Jon Johnston, joined by Nate McHugh, some guy that writes for this site! All these exclamation points, you know something good is happening. It’s another episode of the Five Heart Podcast! WooooOo!Nate is coaching youth baseball. He’s coached a lot of youth sports. We start by having a discussion about officiating in kids’ sports because Nate has spent a lot of time there and has some thoughts on the state of youth officiating. Nate points out that parents yelling at officials aren’t helping their teams. It’s worth a listen. He recommends paying attention to what Frank Martin is saying in this video. I talk about some of my experience in coaching youth soccer for decade, then I bring up an entirely different subject. How much force does it take to dent a human skull? This is what I’ve been spending my past few nights trying to figure out. It’s a subject of my next book. Nate brings up the NIL discussion that occurred on the Doc Talk podcast with Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich, along with ABM guy Gerrod Lambrecht. There’s a bunch of big recruiting happening this month at Nebraska camps. We’d cover that, but CornNation really needs recruiting writers. So, send an email to cornnation@gmail.com along with why you’d like to do this for us if interested. Send any experience. And like Nate says in the podcast... don’t worry if you don’t hear anything for a while. It took me months to respond to him! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Greg, Todd and myself get together for another episode of the Five Heart Podcast. The longest podcast episode EVER. This is my fault for bringing up Thor Heyerdahl and Kontiki. In this episode we cover:The latest transfers in football - Stephon Wynn Jr. and Marcus Washington and how they fit into Nebraska’s football team.Baseball transfers - five players have already entered the transfer portal.Lat Mayen not returning to Nebraska basketball. Then there’s Husker traditions. Greg has a list of Husker traditions; we discuss whether we’d keep them or not and what adjustments we’d make.Did you know that years ago Husker fans threw oranges on the field? No? Well, they did. They threw oranges in the end zones every time we scored to symbolize our desire to get to the Orange Bowl, the most prized season-end destination for years. Then one day that tradition ended. ENDED.The 1982 Nebraska - Oklahoma game was very cold. The oranges people had became frozen. Someone threw a frozen orange that struck an official in the back of the head, permanently disabling him. That tradition ended right there. No onethemselves about it.Why?Because it was a pretty stupid tradition. The Tunnel Walk tradition began in 1994. It just started. Husker fans accepted it rather quickly and it became a great way to recognize that the team was coming on the field so you’d better get your in your seat to see the opening kickoff. No onethemselves about it.Do you know why?Because nobody can remember what we did before the Tunnel Walk to recognize the team coming onto the field. It was a good idea. Now we have the balloon tradition going away. Many people are shitting themselves.Do you know why?I don’t either.Apparently they’d like to keep a tradition where we pumptons of litter into the air and don’t give a about where it ends up.Anyway, give it a listen. This week on the Five Heart Podcast, NO JON! Jon is at a family reunion of sorts, and while we tried to convince him to break away from the family gathering to join is, our Founder and Fearless Leader made a call to the bullpen and had Nate McHugh take his place.Nate, Todd, and I talk about the Big Ten Champion Softball Team as it prepares for regional action in Stillwater, OK. Admittedly, there’s not a lot of baseball to discuss as they need to win out to have a chance to make the Big Ten Tourney.Nebraska basketball acquired two guards from the transfer portal this week, however one didn’t decide until after we recorded. Can one of them run the point and be the on-court general? That remains to be seen. The football team acquired a safety from the NCAAF transfer portal, a former 4-star DB from the Alabama Crimsontide. And then...the discussion around college football has been the dissolution of divisions. The Pac-12 says divisions will still exist but won’t factor into the CCG. Pods. No longer divisions. Your thoughts? Protected opponents or not. Preference of shifting or no?It’s what they’re talking about in Chicago. It’s what we’re talking about on this show this week. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This week, Greg, Todd, and Jon discuss Jon’s recent neck procedure (he’s probably fine) and sounds that sound a lot like a dog throwing up on the kitchen floor (she didn’t).The Husker baseball team did not take care of business this past weekend at Minnesota, and it was the Gophers’ first conference series win in three years. So now Nebraska needs to exceed expectations in its final two weekends of baseball for the best chance to make the Big Ten Tournament. And speaking of Big Ten Tournaments, the Husker Softball team beat Penn State to advance in the bracket. They will face Ohio State later today. Make sure you keep track of the recaps and rundowns from our correspondent Andy.We talked about Bryce McGowens earning an invitation to the NBA Combine and Todd has a plan to do away with the one-and-done college basketball player. Finally, we answered some of your NIL questions from the YouTube comments on Jon’s latest video.Enjoy, Go Big Red, and congrats to Hoss Reuter and all the other graduates walking across the stage today. Todd, Jon and Greg all get together for this week’s edition of the Five Heart Podcast!Jon starts with a surprise announcement that he’s entered the SBNation Podcast transfer portal, seeking a better NIL deal with Blue Chew as a partner. This devolves into.... well, nearly off the edge of an abyss, again. The guys discuss:Ochaun Mathis picking Nebraska over Texas
Defensive lineman transfer Devin Drew
Huskers taken in the NFL draft
Then Todd starts a very serious monologue about Mental Health Awareness Month and how Scott Frost has done an admirable job of working with Omar Manning on his mental health issues.Next:NCAA Sanctions for Scott Frost
Who got screwed more by not winning a Heisman? - Tommie Frazier or Ndamukong Suh
There Are Marriage Tips!Todd brings up an old wound talking about when Jon’s car was destroyed on his wedding night. All this in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast! In lieu of Jon’s book promotion information that usually accompanies the bottom of the podcast article (go look at any of Jon’s other articles), we wanted to take this opportunity, with it being Mental Health Awareness Month, and with Todd’s startling statistic of five college athletes having committed suicide since March, to put the following information below, should you or someone you know need someone. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and their phone number: 800-273-8255. This week for the Five Heart Podcast, Jon is down and out due to stress and exhaustion. So Todd and Greg have a Draft Night discussion. We talk about the overwhelming number of linemen taken in the first round, and how SHOCKINGLY they are coming from some elite teams. But the consensus in the Corn Nation Slack Chat Room is that Cam Jurgens is a Round 2 guy (I say that because it’s 4:45am when I’m writing this out, so I have the benefit of knowing that he wasn’t taken in the first round)Then Todd mentions that this weekend we’re expecting to hear the decision of highly sought d-lineman Ochaun Mathis, who is choosing between Nebraska and Texas. That brought to mind an old episode of King of the Hill. Greg describes it. We talk a little about softball and baseball. We talk about Trey McGowens being an early applicant in the 2022 NBA draft. We believe the door is still open for his return. And finally we talk about the “most beautiful part of Nebraska.”Enjoy. It’s now 5:00am so I’m going to bed for an hour. First of all, let me say I'm sorry not sorry for this show. Todd and Greg made me wait on zoom 30 minutes before either of them showed up. By that time I'd become goofy with delirium.I have been facing a lot of hard problems at work and today I wondered what would be like if all I had to do is take care of a horse. I asked the guys the question, "What do you think it be easier to take care of, your home electronics or a horse?"I used to work with a guy who lamented about the daily chaos in our lives and wished out loud that we were still living in the environment of the 1880s. He also believed that they were finding giant in archaeology sites and that the government was covering all of it up.It's not a great start for a show that goes on and off the rails all the way through out. It doesn't help that Todd is old man cranky because it woken up from a nap just to do the podcast.Along the way, I tell the story about how I once punched a horse in the face.We discuss the Casey Rogers news from every possible angle. Todd does an incredible job of old man cranky, complaining that most of these players don't care about the concept of “team” anymore. We discuss the baseball team, the softball team, and the new basketball player transfer from Alabama.I utter the phrase “dunnies and buckies” because it’s late and I’m tired. Then somehow stagger into a conversation about how I would die killing a grizzly bear with my head.It might be a great time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On the Five Heart Podcast this week, Fearless Leader Jon “” Johnston took a break from the program, leaving Greg and Todd carry the ball this week. The green and red theme looks a little too much like Christmas, but you have to agree that seeing Memorial Stadium lit up in green for St. Patrick’s Day is pretty cool! The main topic of conversation was the Red-White Game, or at least what they referred to as a game. Todd attended and was strong in his opinion that it is foolhardy to try and draw any conclusions from what took place on the field. The coaches limited time on the field for most of the top players, and everything was kept extra vanilla on both sides of the ball.Greg asked whether the Spring Game was necessary, and both agreed that it was an event that allowed young families to attend, thus building the fan base. Future season ticket holders have to come from somewhere!Since the Cornhuskers were swept on their own diamond by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for the second year in a row, Todd made it clear that Jon Johnston will not be allowed to ever show up in Lincoln again when Rutgers comes to town!An update on the Big Ten leading softball team is also given. It’s just Todd and I this week as we get together and discuss this weekend’s 2022 Nebraska football spring game.Nebraska has announced they’ve sold 46,000 tickets to the spring game. When Frost first started in 2018, Nebraska sold 86,000 tickets to the spring game.Four years later and that number has been nearly cut in half. Is this a sign of our disgust with the Scott Frost era of Nebraska football? This is this show our disgust or rejection of the Scott frost era? Or is this a celebration of the fact that Nebraska has gone through consecutive losing seasons, yet still manages to sell more spring game tickets than almost anybody else in the in the College Football landscape? Is this an indication that Nebraska fans have nothing else to do? Or that we just come together, not necessarily to watch football, but to have a great social event centered on something we all love?We discuss this "viral" video.Jon brings up that he has just recently gone shopping for the first time in at least a decade. I’m not even making that up. He bought two new pairs of pants this past weekend to replace the pants he’s worn during this entire pandemic. He also went to church for the first time in two years. It was very difficult. You have to be nice to people. You can’t just yell “Iowa” at the band, even though one guy usually in the band is an Iowan who always gives you . Your minister doesn’t like it when you talk back during the sermon. So you have to be nice, sit still, smile at people and keep your mouth shut.Oh, my God. It’s exhausting. We discussed Nebraska’s baseball team and the recent success at Ohio State. And we talk about what we want to see at this Nebraska spring game, which is Casey Thompson. I’d say 99% of us are going to the spring game to see Casey Thompson. Will he do the Horns Down? Could he? Would he? He’d be an instant hero.Todd discusses Nebraska softball and what a good job Rhonda Ravel is doing.Todd brings up interviews recently with Nebraska’s women’s teams about how they’re bonding. Then Jon tells a story about Schramm Six, the dorm floor that Todd and Jon lived on the 80s and how the floor bonded very well by going to a party where there was stolen nitrous oxide present. I probably shouldn’t tell some of these stories. That’s about it for this episode of the five heart podcast. Thanks for listening! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
