It’s Gameday Eve. This week’s episode has Todd, Jon, and Greg talking about the season opener at Illinois. The Illini have twenty-two (22) “super seniors,” but as is stated in the episode, those are the players who cost Lovie Smith his job. So how much worry is there, really? Also, conference alliances are brought up, and the trio looks at ways to simplify the telecast experience. Greg wonders aloud if there is a market for PPV games again like in the Big XII days except higher quality and fewer commercials. As in...no commercials. And we are DRINKING THAT KOOL-AID and running down our win/loss predictions for the entire season.Lastly...something got screwed up on the audio at times so we apologize and while we sometimes have a backup audio feed, we didn’t this week and you can tell. So sorry in advance.GBR! Always. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Today we interview former SB Nation manager and current Extra Points publisher Matt Brown. What is Extra Points you say? Here is a brief rundown from the site:“This newsletter covers all the off-the-field stuff that shapes college sports, from the largest FBS schools to the smallest NAIA programs. Four days a week, you’ll get commentary, analysis and original reporting on major issues like NIL legislation, how college athletic budgets function, how athletic departments fit (and don’t fit) with the rest of the university, and how the entire enterprise really operates.”In other words, a lot of fun stuff if you are a college football or even a college sports junkie like many of us are. Basically, if you are reading this then it’s probably up your alley. In this episode we dive deep into this upcoming college football season across the nation and the possible outcomes for the season. Matt also gives us his input on the new NIL legislation that is opening doors for college athletes across the country along with some of the issues that may comes it’s way down the road. Finally, Matt hands us an honest view of the Nebraska Football program and what he thinks are some of the things that need to be fixed for the Huskers to succeed on the field.Follow us online!Matt Brown: www.ExtraPointsMB.com Twitter - @MattBrownEPPatrick Gerhart: @PatrickGerhartCorn Nation: www.CornNation.com Twitter - @CornNation Learn more about your ad choices. Todd and I get together for yet another episode of the Five Heart Podcast. We had hoped this week we’d be able to talk about football in fall camp and a game against Illinois that will signify the start of the 2021 college football season in slightly over a week.
But no! We are forced to talk about but leaked news that Nebraska is under NCAA investigation because of some damned simple thing and it sucks. It sucks because it looks like someone’s always trying to torpedo the program. Am I blaming outsiders? Am I blaming traitors? Yes, I am.
That takes up a major portion of the program.
I addressed some personal rumors about Scott Frost that I continue to hear from multiple sources and that truly bothered me. They don’t bother me because I think they’re true, they bother me because people spread this kind of apparently because they hate successful people. Or because in this case Scott Frost hasn’t fed their ego well enough so they need to say nasty things about him in hushed whispers at the coffee shop, during their Saturday night bridge parties, after church, or meeting with the guys for Donuts.
We did the same to Frank Solich. People made up rumors about him. It started the year he went 7- 7 and people were upset because the football program was losing. There were rampant rumors about Frank sleeping with cheerleaders, which is an all-too-common rumor about college football coaches.
Nebraska fans were all too happy to spread rumors. These are the same people who expect Nebraska football to be a quasi-religion, to have a higher moral ground than our opponents, yet ignore the bible’s teachings that rumor spreading and gossip are evil. Steve Pederson wasn’t the only one who screwed Frank Solich over. History is about to repeat itself and that regard.
Todd and I discussed some fall camp news because Scott Frost was on sports nightly and said interesting things such as the Blackshirts would be given out soon and captains would be chosen.
Last we discuss the possibility that I might have a man bun and change my name to Toshiro Mifune, a guy who’s name I completely botched on the podcast.

In today’s episode we interview college football guru Stephen Godfrey. Stephen is a Senior Writer here at SB Nation and Secret Base along with cohost of the college football podcast Split Zone Duo. In today’s episode we dive into this upcoming football season and some of the possible ramifications of what having a vaccinated team versus a not so very vaccinated team on the games. We then dive right into this upcoming season for the Huskers and what problems really need to be fixed in and out of the program before we might see any real progress moving forward. This is a no holds barred episode on the current state of the Husker football program from someone who is outside of the program. If you are interested in a birds eye view of what is going on at 1 Memorial, this might be the episode for you. In this episode, Todd and I get together to discuss what’s going on at Nebraska football’s fall camp.Honestly, I am having a hard time getting enthused about fall camp. It seems to be the same information year after year. In past years, I would have been getting really excited about the upcoming football season by now, but this year I want to see something on the field to show me Nebraska is improved.Todd and I discussed the fact that we think Nebraska will have a good football season, but we’re just not that enthused about fall camp. Tight ends are injured. The running back battle for the starting position should generate more buzz, but Todd brings up the point that we know nothing about these running backs because we really haven’t seen them very much. We discuss my article on Thursday and talk about some Nebraska fans who have thin skin and worry way too much about the fake Lil Red uniform. We also discussed the article about the Jordan Larson statue. I was disappointed it didn’t get more traction, but it was overrun by the fake uniform story. Todd and I discussed that Devaney Center could use a statue or something in front of it. There’s a lot of blank space. I want to bring up an additional point here that I brought up in the podcast but not in the Jordan Larson article. There is currently only one Nebraska football statue that has identifiable people and that is the statue of Brook Berringer and Tom Osborne. There are tons of photos of little boys taken with that statue every year. Why can’t we have one statue of a prominent volleyball player, the premier athletic sport at Nebraska, of a celebrated native Nebraskan that little girls can get their pictures taken in front of whenever they come to see volleyball at the Devaney Center?Football doesn’t have to be the everything sport at the University of Nebraska. There was an announcement out of BYU about a company that will sponsor money to the BYU Cougar football program in the amount that it will pay for the tuition of walk-on football players. That is an excellent thing that’s come out of the new NIL rule. The other big news this week was the NCAA announcing their non-punishment of Baylor for what happened under Art Briles. The moment the announcement was made, Art Briles’ lawyer announced Briles had been completely exonerated when that wasn’t the case at all. Keep in mind that the NCAA couldn’t find Baylor gave impermissible benefits to student athletes because they discovered that the entire campus at Baylor had an attitude of non-reporting. If for some bizarre you wanted your daughter assaulted, Baylor might have been your best choice as a university for that to happen. I get up on an ivory tower, perhaps a little too high, but I want to make this clear:Good things happened at BYU that will change lives.Bad things happened at Baylor that also changed lives. Every day when you get up in the morning, you get to choose which side you want to live on. You can choose to be on the side that changes lives for good or you can choose to sweep as much as possible under the rug and pretend that you’re doing good for people when all you’re doing is harm.  After all the ranty bits, I was tired and the podcast episode concluded. Five Heart had a little different look this week. For the first time in a long time, our benevolent leader and founder Jon “” Johnston had the night off, and Greg made it two weeks in a row! He was joined by Todd Wolverton and Corn Nation wrestling writer Dylan Guenther to “get educated” on man’s oldest sport. Unfortunately, the three of them could not replace the ranting and swearing that Jon has perfected. However, they discussed Husker wrestling past, present and future, starting with a salute to Jordan Burroughs and ending with an update on incoming recruits and the current state of Cornhusker wrestling.Give us a listen, you too might learn as much as Greg! And, let this be the appetizer to the upcoming coverage of Nebraska football and volleyball as both seasons are right around the corner! GREG RETURNS!Greg joins me and Todd for an afternoon discussion about college football season. THIS college football season, which is quickly coming upon us!IT IS TIME TO START DRINKING THE KOOL AID YOU SUNSABITCHES.You can be all...“I’ll wait and see... ”or“They need to show me something...”Or you can just give it up and get on this boat, that’s leaving the harbor in less than 30 days. It might sink 200 feet offshore when we hit the Illinois game, but it might be the greatest journey you’ve been on in a while.I’d recommend you get on the boat, you doubting candy . Either way, it’s going to be a fun adventure. Maybe fighting for your life while sharks circle isn’t your way of defining fun, but it’s better than hiding under your bed waiting for the day they tell you you’re bound for the rest home for the rest of your days.IT HAS OCCURRED TO METhis might be the funnest football season we’ve seen in quite a while. Can you imagine what it will be like watching Texas and Oklahoma go through what might be their final season in the Big 12? Do you think Texas will get an extra second? Do you think they’ll get any call in their favor? Do you think they could go 0-however many Big 12 games they play?Oklahoma is poised to be a playoff contender. Do you think Bob Bowlsby really wants to give them a Big 12 trophy? Or do you think they might get robbed of a couple victories that ruins their playoff chances?Oh, my friends. This could be a blast. Then there’s Nebraska. So many questions. Who’s the starting running back? Who’s the backup quarterback? Will Omar Manning contribute this season? Will we find a pass rusher? And then, Todd teaches us a new song. It’s kind of.... weird. This is a brand new Five Heart Podcast, with Jon Johnston and Todd Wolverton. There was plenty of scuttlebutt this week as Texas and Oklahoma announced their intentions to leave the conference they love to go to “greener pastures.” And in this case, it’s all about the money. I mean, it was a decade ago for Nebraska, too, but we also hate Texas. It’s odd to me that two teams that hate each other as much as they do would be in cahoots to abandon the Big XII together, hand in hand, skipping on down to the SEC.Also, it was Big Ten Media Days. And things were said. That’s about it. And from the feedback we saw on social media this week, you all are tired of hearing talk and are anxious to see improvement on the field (we are too, but we’re contractually obligated to cover B10 Media Days).Meanwhile, hang in there. We’re getting closer every day.GBR Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Todd and I get together for another episode of the Five Heart Podcast! It’s a grand old time as we discuss the latest monumental hire of Rob Childress as director of player development for the Nebraska baseball program. Then there’s this other hire that happened this week as Trev Alberts is Nebraska’s athletic director. Neither Todd nor I are that impressed with this hire. We discuss that. KEEP IN MIND - that just because neither of us are really positive on this hire that we want Mr. Alberts to fail. I speak for myself when I say that I hope he’s incredibly successful to the point that my questioning of this hire is ridiculed for ages to come. We also wonder if Nebraska’s media has asked Mr. Alberts about his dismissal of the UNO Wrestling program and given him a chance to clear the air. Enjoy the podcast! Give us some feedback! It’s been a couple months since the last episode of The Counter Bootleg Podcast. In the 12th episode I quickly discuss who I wanted as Athletic Director. Spoiler alert - Trev Alberts was not my first pick. Then I went over my initial reaction to the news that Trev Alberts would be the new athletic director at Nebraska. As I say in the podcast my immediate reaction was, “OH, COME ON!.”After several hours of thinking about the hire the excitement dissipated and I reevaluated my initial reactions. If you listen to the podcast I bet you will find that you probably also had a lot of the same thoughts one way or the other. I still don’t know where I land on the decision but regardless he’s the one they picked and now all I can do is hope he is successful. Please give it a listen! Please subscribe and download the podcast. Leave a review and let me know what you think! If there’s a football topic that you would like me to comment on for less than 10 minutes then let me know.
