Todd, Jon and Greg all get together for this week’s edition of the Five Heart Podcast!Jon starts with a surprise announcement that he’s entered the SBNation Podcast transfer portal, seeking a better NIL deal with Blue Chew as a partner. This devolves into.... well, nearly off the edge of an abyss, again. The guys discuss:Ochaun Mathis picking Nebraska over Texas
Defensive lineman transfer Devin Drew
Huskers taken in the NFL draft
Then Todd starts a very serious monologue about Mental Health Awareness Month and how Scott Frost has done an admirable job of working with Omar Manning on his mental health issues.Next:NCAA Sanctions for Scott Frost
Who got screwed more by not winning a Heisman? - Tommie Frazier or Ndamukong Suh
There Are Marriage Tips!Todd brings up an old wound talking about when Jon’s car was destroyed on his wedding night. All this in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast! In lieu of Jon’s book promotion information that usually accompanies the bottom of the podcast article (go look at any of Jon’s other articles), we wanted to take this opportunity, with it being Mental Health Awareness Month, and with Todd’s startling statistic of five college athletes having committed suicide since March, to put the following information below, should you or someone you know need someone. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and their phone number: 800-273-8255. This week for the Five Heart Podcast, Jon is down and out due to stress and exhaustion. So Todd and Greg have a Draft Night discussion. We talk about the overwhelming number of linemen taken in the first round, and how SHOCKINGLY they are coming from some elite teams. But the consensus in the Corn Nation Slack Chat Room is that Cam Jurgens is a Round 2 guy (I say that because it’s 4:45am when I’m writing this out, so I have the benefit of knowing that he wasn’t taken in the first round)Then Todd mentions that this weekend we’re expecting to hear the decision of highly sought d-lineman Ochaun Mathis, who is choosing between Nebraska and Texas. That brought to mind an old episode of King of the Hill. Greg describes it. We talk a little about softball and baseball. We talk about Trey McGowens being an early applicant in the 2022 NBA draft. We believe the door is still open for his return. And finally we talk about the “most beautiful part of Nebraska.”Enjoy. It’s now 5:00am so I’m going to bed for an hour. First of all, let me say I'm sorry not sorry for this show. Todd and Greg made me wait on zoom 30 minutes before either of them showed up. By that time I'd become goofy with delirium.I have been facing a lot of hard problems at work and today I wondered what would be like if all I had to do is take care of a horse. I asked the guys the question, "What do you think it be easier to take care of, your home electronics or a horse?"I used to work with a guy who lamented about the daily chaos in our lives and wished out loud that we were still living in the environment of the 1880s. He also believed that they were finding giant in archaeology sites and that the government was covering all of it up.It's not a great start for a show that goes on and off the rails all the way through out. It doesn't help that Todd is old man cranky because it woken up from a nap just to do the podcast.Along the way, I tell the story about how I once punched a horse in the face.We discuss the Casey Rogers news from every possible angle. Todd does an incredible job of old man cranky, complaining that most of these players don't care about the concept of “team” anymore. We discuss the baseball team, the softball team, and the new basketball player transfer from Alabama.I utter the phrase “dunnies and buckies” because it’s late and I’m tired. Then somehow stagger into a conversation about how I would die killing a grizzly bear with my head.It might be a great time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On the Five Heart Podcast this week, Fearless Leader Jon “” Johnston took a break from the program, leaving Greg and Todd carry the ball this week. The green and red theme looks a little too much like Christmas, but you have to agree that seeing Memorial Stadium lit up in green for St. Patrick’s Day is pretty cool! The main topic of conversation was the Red-White Game, or at least what they referred to as a game. Todd attended and was strong in his opinion that it is foolhardy to try and draw any conclusions from what took place on the field. The coaches limited time on the field for most of the top players, and everything was kept extra vanilla on both sides of the ball.Greg asked whether the Spring Game was necessary, and both agreed that it was an event that allowed young families to attend, thus building the fan base. Future season ticket holders have to come from somewhere!Since the Cornhuskers were swept on their own diamond by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for the second year in a row, Todd made it clear that Jon Johnston will not be allowed to ever show up in Lincoln again when Rutgers comes to town!An update on the Big Ten leading softball team is also given. It’s just Todd and I this week as we get together and discuss this weekend’s 2022 Nebraska football spring game.Nebraska has announced they’ve sold 46,000 tickets to the spring game. When Frost first started in 2018, Nebraska sold 86,000 tickets to the spring game.Four years later and that number has been nearly cut in half. Is this a sign of our disgust with the Scott Frost era of Nebraska football? This is this show our disgust or rejection of the Scott frost era? Or is this a celebration of the fact that Nebraska has gone through consecutive losing seasons, yet still manages to sell more spring game tickets than almost anybody else in the in the College Football landscape? Is this an indication that Nebraska fans have nothing else to do? Or that we just come together, not necessarily to watch football, but to have a great social event centered on something we all love?We discuss this "viral" video.Jon brings up that he has just recently gone shopping for the first time in at least a decade. I’m not even making that up. He bought two new pairs of pants this past weekend to replace the pants he’s worn during this entire pandemic. He also went to church for the first time in two years. It was very difficult. You have to be nice to people. You can’t just yell “Iowa” at the band, even though one guy usually in the band is an Iowan who always gives you . Your minister doesn’t like it when you talk back during the sermon. So you have to be nice, sit still, smile at people and keep your mouth shut.Oh, my God. It’s exhausting. We discussed Nebraska’s baseball team and the recent success at Ohio State. And we talk about what we want to see at this Nebraska spring game, which is Casey Thompson. I’d say 99% of us are going to the spring game to see Casey Thompson. Will he do the Horns Down? Could he? Would he? He’d be an instant hero.Todd discusses Nebraska softball and what a good job Rhonda Ravel is doing.Todd brings up interviews recently with Nebraska’s women’s teams about how they’re bonding. Then Jon tells a story about Schramm Six, the dorm floor that Todd and Jon lived on the 80s and how the floor bonded very well by going to a party where there was stolen nitrous oxide present. I probably shouldn’t tell some of these stories. That’s about it for this episode of the five heart podcast. Thanks for listening! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

If you think about it, a verbal slap should hurt less than a physical one, right?Well, if you thought you were going to listen to one podcast this week and avoid the biggest news story of the week, you were wrong. But it’s Jon’s fault. We talk a little about Spring football and the 2022 season, and to the surprise of no one, we all disagree on the bar Scott Frost and Co. need to clear to keep his job in Lincoln. And while there’s a transfer portal player coming for an official visit for the Spring Game, we discuss one Husker who is staying put and not leaving, and that Husker is Nebrasketball big man Derrick Walker Jr. The primary emphasis for Hoiberg and his staff should be roster consistency, so learning that Walker is returning is fantastic news.Todd abandons us when we go to talk about Nebraska baseball, so when he comes back he has to provide his two cents, and meanwhile, there’s a Husker team absolutely crushing it this Spring, and that’s softball. Take every opportunity you can to watch Husker women’s athletics, as it is apparent they are the only ones playing consistently well. That’s all. GBR. Learn more about your ad choices. NFL draft Brian, our NFL guy here at CN, joins Greg and I for this episode of the Five Heart podcast. It’s a NFL-based podcast where we go over all of the Nebraska players that have the potential for getting into the NFL, whether drafted or being picked up as undrafted free agents. We discuss Cam Jurgens and how far he’s come. Brian thinks he could go as high as the second round, which is pretty astonishing given how bad his snaps were when he first started at center for Nebraska.Cam Taylor-Britt and JoJo Domann are Husker favorites - we discuss their potential draft positions, where they might fit, and how well they could do in the league.Austin Allen is one of my favorite Huskers to show up as one of the prospects for this year’s draft. Can the big tight end make a roster, and if so, where might he fit?Towards the end of the show we review NFL news in general and how crazy this off-season’s been so far. Tom Brady is coming back.Baker Mayfield is leaving Cleveland. Deshaun Watson, despite having 22 lawsuits against him, is in at Cleveland for 230 million guaranteed dollars. That’s insane. Happy St. Patty’s Day!Todd O’Wolverton and Jon O’Johnston begin this episode of the Five Heart Podcast with a few moments of somber recognition for Iowa, who lost in the first round of the NCAA Basketball tournament. Jon had picked them in two brackets to go to the championship game. He takes credit for destroying them by rooting for them, the brackets. We discuss the gloriousness of March Madness, then Todd gives us a rundown of what’s happening at the NCAA Wrestling tournament. Nebraska is in #6 place, with four wrestlers advancing past the first day of action. We spend some time discussing Nebraska baseball, as Todd has already been to several games. We talk to about what’s going on with this team and their lack of consistency.Greg joins late and everything goes to , as he’s triggered by the return of Tom Brady, which leads us into a discussion of NFL quarterbacks and who might be the greatest of all time.Oh yeah, there’s spring football. And a change to the Nebraska men’s basketball coaching staff.Things devolve even further as the two elders give Greg parenting advice. Jon is bothered by the lack of success shown by the guy trying to counsel people not to be their parents in the Progressive Insurance commercials. That guy must suck!Greg decides it would be a good idea that for the rest of the offseason we do segments on parenting advice. Or life advice. And Todd can give dating tips because Todd is good at that sort of thing.SO IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ON PARENTING OR WANT DATING TIPS FROM TODD, WE NEED YOUR QUESTIONS DAMMIT. Greg and I got together and recorded a podcast episode a little while after Nebraska lost to Northwestern in the Big Ten basketball tournament.I was sad. Greg was bitter. Such a frustrating loss after the team had been playing well the past couple weeks. They lead at the end of the first half by double digits. You put these dreams in your head about Nebraska making a run and somehow winning the Big Ten and they don’t even get past the first game against the nerds.I was in a cranky mood most of the day Wednesday and because I was in a cranky mood, I went on Twitter and made a lot of Nebraska fans cranky with a tweet about Scott Frost and how he talks to the media. We discuss the tweet and the fallout on this episode.Am I nitpicking? Yes, to a degree I gave Nebraska fans a whole afternoon either agreeing with me or being angry with me so what do you want for free?Greg can remember the entire plot to the movie Revenge of the Nerds from the 80s. I find this astonishing. We discussed the baseball team, and the basketball team and talk about football current events. We discuss the recent survey about Memorial Stadium changes in what people would like to see. I talk about alcohol in the stadium, including a quote from Mike Osborne about how he rather not see alcohol sales in Memorial Stadium.Big Red Business: Moving the ball forward on alcohol sales at NebraskaI worry that our kids will be watching adults buying and consuming alcohol in a place we have long held as special and unique and devoted to showing the best of what our state is about. I think there is plenty of alcohol available at the tailgates and most determined fans can figure out a way to sneak in a few sips if they feel it is necessary. I respectfully disagree with those who said the Garth Brooks concert showed that alcohol should be sold at games. It was a like-minded crowd of fans all support.”I recently sent the manuscript for my next book to my editor. Greg and I briefly discuss what the book is about. I’ve named it “Manage Your Damage - Heart Attack Survivor”. It’s intended for Heart Attack Survivors (is that obvious? I’d like to know) who are dealing with anxiety, anger and depression and all the emotional and physical aspects that accompany heart attacks. We also bag for people to give us ideas for this off-season because I am firmly convinced there aren’t many people who care about following Nebraska football that closely so if you have other topics you’d like us discuss we will certainly be interested in hearing about them thank you very much Learn more about your ad choices.
