Five Heart Podcast 355: The Iowa Over-Reaction with Hoss

Due to scheduling conflicts last weekend, Greg and Hoss were unable to get together to record the Corn Nation Over Reaction. So this week’s Five Heart Podcast is a special presentation of the Five Heart and Over Reaction shows.
13-10. It still sticks in my craw, as I’m sure it does yours. Losing to Iowa to close out another season in a game that was entirely winnable adds frustration to an already beleaguered fanbase.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. At one point, Nebraska was 5-3 and looking like a team that would have its first bowl berth since 2016. But as the season went on, the elusive sixth win continued to evade the Cornhuskers.
In this episode, Greg, Jon, and Hoss will discuss that one-score loss as well as Matt Rhule’s first season. nd heading into another extended offseason, the guys will discuss the state of the program, the Tony White rumors, and our overall mental health regarding Husker football.

Monday Night Therapy: Nebraska Football Season Ends Early (Again), A Discussion

The 2023 Nebraska football season is over. At one point, Nebraska was 5-3 with four games left to win one to get to a bowl game. Didn’t happen.
Now as we stare into the abyss of the off-season (despite the fact there are plenty of other Husker sports), we must ask - who is to blame, and whom must we burn at the stake?
It’s what we do.
Unless your name is Scott Frost. Then we just sit around and give you plenty of time to auger the program into the ground.
There was plenty of discussion around Nebraska sports. Our beloved Huskers went 0-3 last Friday.
Volleyball lost to Wisconsin in Madison.
Our soccer team lost in the Elite Eight round in the NCAA Tournament. They gave Stanford a run, but were short in a 2-1 loss in OT.
And of course, football lost another 13-10 game on the final play of the game. Incredible.
There was plenty of discussion about the lack of offense, why Minnesota gets into a bowl game at 5-7, Marcus Satterfield, quarterbacks, you name it. We covered a fair amount of ground in an hour.

Scott Dochterman, who covers the Iowa Hawkeyes for The Athletic, joined me for a half-hour preview of the Nebraska - Iowa rivalry match this Friday.
Scott didn’t have a lot of free time, so I was limited on the amount of witty banter, so instead, I chose to dive right into the important Iowa football questions for which you want answers.

Another Disappointing One Score Nebraska Loss, Iowa Hate Week Is Upon Us!

There was a lot of positive that happened in Husker sports over the weekend:
The Volleyball team won the Big Ten
The Soccer team qualified for the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament, beating UC Irvine 4-0
Men’s basketball team is 5-0 for the first time since 2008
The women’s basketball team is 3-1 with a loss to Creighton
Wrestling is undefeated - won the Navy tournament over the weekend
Unfortunately, all that positive is drowned out by:
Nebraska losing another one-score game to Wisconsin in OT, 24-17. ARRGHHHH!
There is a lot to discuss regarding the loss to the Badgers. Once again, Nebraska takes on a team that looks like they’re on the ropes, and once again, Nebraska comes away with a heart-breaking (perhaps TV-smashing) loss.
Did Matt Rhule make the right call being conservative at the end of regulation?
Could the officials call holding, and when they did, why the hell did they? Could they have called tripping?
What about the play of Chubba Purdy!

Corn Nation Over Reaction: Hello Darkness My Old Friend, the Losses Mounting Up Again

Nebraska has lost three straight after improving to 5-3 following Saturday’s 24-17 overtime loss in Wisconsin.
This week, Hoss and Greg discuss the game, and predictably, spend a ton of time dissecting Nebraska’s last drive. Huskers have the ball on the Badger 26 yard line with ninety-five seconds left in the game, three timeouts, trailing the home team by three points.
The Huskers settled for a field goal, tying the game with four seconds left, forcing overtime.
We know the rest.
But believe it or not, the guys are on opposite sides of the clock management, play it safe or go-for-the-win approach.
Hoss takes umbrage with some play-calling on both sides of the ball. But let’s not overlook that the defense stood tall in the second half and provided the offense with the opportunity to mount a comeback.
Iowa is all that stands in the way of Nebraska’s return to post-season football, a 6-win season, and bowl eligibility.
And those bastards just won the Big Ten West.

Huskers Seeking Rare Win in Wisconsin

History is not on Nebraska’s side on this one, but with bowl eligibility STILL on the line and two games remaining, it’s time for the Huskers to get the rare W in Wisconsin.
Jon is out this week for personal reasons, but Greg has a guest that is sure to get a reaction from the Chatterfields.
The duo will discuss the Maryland game, but only briefly, as we want to turn our attention to the Badgers and how a win at Camp Randall would end two elusive streaks, Winning in Wisconsin would be the Huskers’ first win in Madison since 1966. And it would mean that Nebraska would be bowl-eligible for the first time in too many years.

Corn Nation Over Reaction: Turned Over

The turnover count went up. The win total did not.
Ball control continues to plague the Nebraska football team that otherwise would have a few more wins under its belt.
Yes, on the surface the 3rd and goal play call late in the game seems like a bad decision. But Hoss breaks down that particular play in the course of the episode and explains how and why it broke down. I asked “why not just run to the middle of the field and secure at least three points.
Believe it or not, this is a team on the rise. Tony White has the defense playing at such a high level. And while the injuries have stacked up on offense this year, that means that a lot of young guys are getting experience and will return with that experience and healthy veterans next year.
But we still have two games left this season. And Hoss poses a thought-provoking question.
If Nebraska is going to finish 7-5, would you rather the sixth and seventh wins be against Michigan State and Maryland or Wisconsin and Iowa?
Let’s take the fight to Madison and kick them when they’re down!

Nebraska Football: The Most Positive News I Can Give You - Something Good Is Happening!

It was an extremely tough loss against Maryland. Husker fans across the world are talking about the pass that shouldn’t have been.
FIRE MARCUS SATTERFIELD seems to be the rallying cry for many a Husker fan right now!
Out of that frustration comes clarity I will present tonight at 7 pm!
It was a well-attended show. The commenters kept things flowing with discussion about everything from Marcus Satterfield to Nebraska’s quarterbacks to the IRS shutting down NIL at some point because it looks too much like money laundering.
The good news is - There has been so much talk about one play the past couple days.
What is positive is what we’re not talking about.
We’re not talking about false starts, holding calls, stupid personal foul penalties, or punt returns (we didn’t have a lot of chances against Maryland but at least we tried).
This team, warts and all, is a QB away from being decent.
